Homemade Turkey Broth – easy crock pot method!

If you haven’t made turkey broth from your Thanksgiving turkey carcass & neck bones, you’ve got to try my easy Overnight Turkey Broth …. I call the stuff “liquid gold”.

I could drink this homemade turkey broth daily and never tire of it! This tastes nothing like the store bought broth.

Turkey broth that you buy from the store, I cannot even drink that broth! Oh my, I do not know what on earth they do to turkey broth, but it is not good! So don’t judge homemade turkey broth to store broth, there is no comparison. Now yes, as needed, I do buy chicken broth & beef broth from the store and its fine, but turkey broth – – nope, I just can’t drink that stuff.

Let me share my recipe for the best homemade turkey broth you ever tasted, and how you can easily make it in the crock-pot, overnight, with very little effort!

This overnight crock pot method is so simple! So don’t throw out your wings, legs, or cleaned off turkey carcass, afterwards, because Oh My, you can make some of the most tasty, delicious & healthy broth from all those good bones!

I truly only recommend using quality turkey bones, from a farm or source that is reputable. If you happen to live in West Michigan, we have several great turkey farms that raise healthy wonderful birds! One of my favorite farms is Ottos Turkey Farm in Middleville. Remember we always want to use quality bones when making any bone broths.

One More Helpful Tip: If you love to sip savory turkey broth all winter long, like I do, here’s a tip. At most farms you can purchase packages of just wings and just necks, (yes, without needing the whole turkey carcass) and use just those, to make great broth in the crockpot, the very same way! So grab some pkgs of wings & necks to put in your freezer, for making broth in the months ahead on a cold snowy afternoon! What a treat to sip on all winter!

Ok, here’s how to make easy, no-think, “Overnight Turkey Broth” in the crock pot!

You’re going to love this nourishing liquid gold to sip on, it’s so perfect for using in the weeks after Thanksgiving.

Step 1 – Put any turkey bones, skin, juices, wings and or neck into a large crock pot. Add 1 tablespoon good salt, 1 onion quartered, I like to add a stalk or 2 of celery if I have on hand, then a lil splash of apple cider vinegar. (a splash is about 1/4 cup 🙂 Now, fill Crock pot with water (non-chlorinated) so all is covered well. Do not overfill or it will gently bubble out onto the counter (and it’s not fun losing that good broth).

Apple Cider Vinegar helps pull out more collagen, nutrients & minerals from the bones, therefore making the broth even more abundant in collagen and rich with minerals. Which is what we want!

Step 2 – Turn your crock pot on LOW. You do not want to hurry this or boil it on high. You want a looooong low simmer for 24-30 hours.

Step 3 – Now strain all this delicious rich broth into a new container, (your whole house will be smelling amazing to wake up too, and you’ll be sipping on broth instead of coffee on this morning:) I just strain it into my big stainless-steel pan because it will hold it all. You don’t want to put hot broth into plastic containers, and glass can get hot and be hard to handle. I find a large clean pan with handles, works really well.

Step 4 – Now you’re going to chill this strained broth so just put the whole pan, in the refrigerator overnight. As it chills all the fat rises to the top and hardens. When its chilled, it’s so easy for pouring and dividing up the next day. You can decide if you want to lift the fat off and (feed to your animals) or keep it on and divide it up right along with the broth the next morning. It’s also a healthy fat for consuming and there won’t be alot. That parts totally up to you.

The next morning when the broth is fully chilled then you can freeze it into ziploc bags at this point, or glass jars, or however you want to freeze it. You can also just fill 2 half gallon jars and store in the refrigerator to sip on or make a turkey soup with. It will last 1-2 weeks in the frig. or about 9 months in the freezer.

Step 5 – Just enjoy sipping and using this delicious golden broth filled with nourishment in any way you like, sipping cups in the evenings, in soups, make into a thickened gravy on baked potatoes, for chicken potpie recipes, add to dressings, in any favorite soup recipe you love! Any place you use chicken broth you can use turkey broth, just the same. Personally, I savor just sipping this rich golden broth!
