Homemade caramel apples are super easy!
Wash and DRY 7-9 apples (Honeycrisp is our favorite apple). Push a stick down into the center of each. Set apples aside while you make the caramel.
In a sauce pan put
2 cups Brown sugar
1 cup Light corn syrup
1/2 cup butter (not Margarine!)
1 can of sweetened condensed milk.
Boil this creamy mixture until turns dark like caramel and thickens – about 20min total. Now Cool it some (approx. 10 min) so your caramel doesn’t just fall right off your apples.
Next most importantly stir in 1 Tablespoon Vanilla Extract for a yummy caramel flavor.
Now call your family ’round and have fun dippin’ apples into caramel and rolling them in chopped nuts or red sprinkles. Set them on parchment paper and they won’t stick. (wax paper will stick!)
If you really want to have fun………..
you can melt white or milk chocolate chips in a ziploc type freezer baggy in the microwave…. for just a few seconds until its soft and squeezable, then snip the corner end of the baggy and you can just swizzle a little chocolate on top of your caramel apples for a gourmet apple!
These are fun to make as a family together on a cool evening or a fall Sunday afternoon.
