Caramel Apples… Yum!

Well Fall is here and that means time to make caramel apples! If you haven’t dipped apples into homemade creamy dreamy caramel together as a family then pick a fall weekend and make plans to do it! And you can let everyone dip them in their choice of nuts, sprinkles or even drizzle them gourmet with chocolate.
But my ultimate favorite is just the good ole caramel apple dipped in lots & lots of peanuts. These are fun and the caramel is delicious.

This recipe is pretty simple, no need to be intimidated by homemade caramel, it’s no harder than making chocolate chip cookies. Just takes a little patience is all.
Homemade caramel apples are are pretty easy and they really dont take long at all. so you want to have your apples all washed and dried ahead and your nuts or sprinkles ready also!

First Wash and DRY 7-9 apples (Honeycrisp and Jonagolds are 2 of our favorite apples), but choose whatever your favorite apple is. Next Push a popcycle stick down into the center of each. Now Set apples aside while you make the caramel.
Caramel recipe:
In a sauce pan put
2 cups Brown sugar
1 cup Light corn syrup
1/2 cup butter (not Margarine!)
1 can of sweetened condensed milk.
Boil this creamy mixture until turns dark like caramel and thickens – takes about 20min total. Remove it from the heat and Next most importantly stir in 1 Tablespoon Vanilla Extract for a yummy caramel flavor.
Now let Cool just a bit (approx. 10 min) so your caramel doesn’t fall right off your apples. If your caramel is super hot it will slide right back off. But if you apples are chilled and your caramel cools for just 7 -10min then it will dip nice and thick and stay on the apple. 🙂

Now call your family ’round and have fun dippin’ apples into caramel and rolling them in chopped nuts or red sprinkles. Set them on parchment paper and they won’t stick. (wax paper will stick!)
If you really want to have fun………..
you can melt white or milk chocolate chips in a ziploc type freezer baggy in the microwave…. for just a few seconds until its soft and squeezable, then snip the corner end of the baggy and you can just swizzle a little chocolate on top of your caramel apples for a gourmet apple! You choose 🙂
These are fun to make as a family together on a cool evening or a fall Sunday afternoon. Fall just isn’t fall with out homemade caramel apples!
I hope you enjoy making and eating this fun fall treat!
